Resumo

This article aims to confront the paradigms of Brazilian foreign policy with the new scenario that is forming due to the process of China’s rise. It revisits the theoretical debate regarding what can be called the power transition between the country and the United States, in addition to the implications for Chinese positions and the international system. It also underlines the paradigms of Brazilian foreign policy, with an emphasis on issues such as autonomism and different interpretations about cooperation and multilateralism. Then, strategic points for Brazil that may undergo changes/transformations in the context of China’s rise in the international system are discussed, in order to consider how the country can ensure its interests in a new order. As results, it was possible to observe that, as China advances in the process of power transition, what is currently observed as South-South Cooperation may take on even greater degrees of asymmetry. In this way, it is necessary for the Brazilian foreign policy to realign itself so as to preserve Brazilian autonomy in the face of new challenges, something already done quite a bit in previous moments of History.
