População e atividades econômicas em Areias1817-1836

Resumo

This paper has analysed the populational and economic dynamics of Areias from 1817 to 1836, period in which there occured strong changes through the introduction of the coffee growing. The former cultures (sugar, white rum and subsistence products) have probably served as a basis till the maturity of the production of coffee was accomplished, generating the resources required for its own expansion. The coffee growing, which at the beginning has also been developed by farmers who bad no slaves, has radically transformed the productive structure of the site: the slave work was significantly boosted, and the size of the productive areas increased; moreover, it generated a strong concentration in the coffee growing activity and in the co-related activities, such as the artisan work and commerce.
