Percepções do desenvolvimento em três municípios paulistas

Resumo

Through a survey research, this paper measures the perceptions of the inhabitants of three cities in the State of São Paulo – Jaboticabal, Olímpia and Bebedouro – concerning the development of their cities by means of relating such perceptions with the real evolution/situation of development of these cities. In the period from 1991 to 2010, these three cities had significant progress in their Municipal Human Development Indexes (which we considered here as measure of development) and they are nowadays developed. In Bebedouro, with a recent unstable economic development characterized by fluctuations in the and fall in industrial employment, we notice perceptions that the city used to be more developed in the past and that it has not developed for the last twenty years; this is opposed to the perceptions about Jaboticabal and Olímpia, with stable economic performance, which indicates that the perception of development is related to the current economic condition of the cities, thus unrelated to the real evolution of their development, that is, in the view of the majority of the inhabitants, the process of development is linked to the economic dynamism of their localities
