Resumo

This study focuses on the use of imported inputs by Brazilian industrial companies in the period 2008-2018, taking as a reference an industrial database collected by IBGE that is only used as input to other research carried out by that institution. The results are detailed by sectors – divisions and groups of the National Classification of Economic Activities (Classificação Nacional de Atividades Econômicas – CNAE) 2.0 – and include an intra-sectoral differentiation of the performance of firms within divisions and groups. The evolution of the manufacturing industry’s imported inputs coefficient does not present a defined trend, showing two cycles of decline and recovery. Import coefficients of different manufacturing industries are differentiated following a segmentation that reflects the nature of their production, contrasting the manufacturers of chemical products, capital goods and consumer durables (which present higher and increasing coefficients in the period) to the manufacturers of non-chemical intermediate goods, semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods (which present much lower and stable coefficients). According to the study, when it comes to the share of imported inputs in the country’s manufacturing production, monitoring the Brazilian industry’s insertion in global value chains should focus on the evolution of the chemical products, capital goods and consumer durables sectors.
