Os sentidos do trabalho para motoristas de uma empresa de ônibus urbano da cidade do Rio de Janeiro

Resumo

Objective – This study aimed to analyze the meaning of work for urban bus drivers in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In addition, considering the possible differences related to their life cycle and maturity, we compared the perspectives of drivers from different age groups. Methodology – A qualitative research was conducted with the participation of 22 drivers from the same urban bus company in Rio de Janeiro. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were carried out, and the analysis was performed based on categories defined a posteriori, with the support of the Atlas.ti software.
 A qualitative research was conducted, with the participation of 22 drivers from the same bus company in Rio de Janeiro. The method used to conduct the interviews was inspired by the life history method and data analysis was performed with the support of Atlas.ti software. Results – The results showed that the remuneration, considered relatively high for the required level of education, and the pleasure of driving were the main aspects that giving meaning to their work. In addition, it was observed that work has high centrality, but is less important than family for most participants. In that regard, it is important to note that remuneration is valued, to a large extent, because it allows them to provide material comfort to family members. Differences between mature and younger drivers were also identified. The mature drivers seem to enjoy more their work and they also feel more recognized when compared to the younger ones.
 Limitations – The research was conducted with drivers from the same company, so that its culture, reinforced by specific criteria of recruitment and selection, may have limited a greater diversity of perspectives. Another limitation is due to the fact that the researcher is also an employee of the same company and exerts a management role and is directly related to the interviewees. Practical contributions – From an applied perspective, the results may guide the development of human resources policies and practices that contribute to a more positive work experience. Contributions to society – With this research, we seek to contribute to filling a gap in studies on the meaning of work, usually focused on professions with higher social status. Originality – This research innovates by comparing the meaning of work among professionals of the same profession, but of different age groups.
