Resumo

The objective of this study is to examine the impacts of female and male income in the patterns of household consumption and to evaluate the intra-household decisions for different consumption groups. The models considered are: i) the unitary level, at which income from husbands and wives are pooled assuming that there is a single utility function of preference for all members; and ii) the collective model, which takes into account different levels of individual preferences. The main results show that the unitary model is rejected for household food, women’s clothing, school fees, health, men’s clothing and transportation. Moreover, women’s income has greater impacts in the first four groups than male’s income. The unitary model, on the other hand, is not rejected for other consumer groups such as eating out, children expenditures, culture and recreation, tobacco and alcohol, and housing and donations.
