Resumo

The legacies of mega sporting events present collective interests from different actors in contemporary society. In this context, this research seeks to examine the sporting legacy of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the first to be held in Brazil and on the South American continent. In an attempt to investigate the effects of the legacy for sports nationally and locally, the object of analysis of the research is the National Training Network, announced as the greatest heritage for national sport, especially the Olympic Training Center, the main sports equipment in the country, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In its methodological execution, this dissertation presents a bibliographic review of the main themes related to sports legacies and mega-events; analysis of other editions of the Games and their respective local consequences; and a deeper look - through literature, contacts with responsible bodies, technical visits and interviews with athletes, coaches, public managers and sports managers -into the sports equipment considered. The analysis resulting from this study, which involved key stakeholders for the theoretical and practical understanding of the legacy, reveals that, although the equipment built proves to be of a high sports level, the legacy was not managed as planned and its execution is not consistent with the projects announced. In Brazil, a country that extinguished the ministry of sports and does not envisage substantial investments in this area, the 2016 Olympic legacy is also informally called the Olympic dump
