O evolver demográfico e econômico nos espaços fluminenses1780-1840

Resumo

We have followed the demographic and economic development ofRio de Janeiro from 1780 to 1840, based on three maps of population for the years 1780, 1821 and 1840. We have also used information available in the literature as well as export statistics on the fluminense economy in that period to give an idea ofits economic evolution. Based on these scattered data, we have divided the region of Rio de Janeiro into four areas: the sugar-producing area, the coffee-producing area, the town of Rio de Janeiro, and the last area comprising all the remaining parishes. In the period studied, coffee became the main factor of demographic and economic change in Rio de Janeiro. The migratory movemnts observed favoured mainly the cofee-producing area of Vale do Paraiba Fluminense. The demographic dynamism of the sugar-producing area was also prominent, in spit of having a lower growth rate than that of the coffee producing area. The two remaining areas showed a decreasing share in total population, with the most significant reduction ocurring in the slave population.
