Mudanças na distribuição espacial da produção de grãos, aves e suínos no Brasil o papel do Centro-Oeste

Resumo

This paper seeks to analyse to what extent the Center-West has a competitive advantage in the production of poultry and hogs, vis-à-vis the Southeast and the South, due to lower prices of corn and soybeans and, therefore, to lower feed costs. For this purpose, the paper compares the price differentials of these grains between states in the period 1980/95 and estimates the trade flows of corn, chicken and pork for the same period. The main conclusion is that, given the present spacial price structure, there is no significant reduction in the cost of production of poultry meat between the Center-Western and the Southern regions due to lower feed cost. The same thing, however, does not happen between the Center-West and the Southeast. The paper also takes into account other factors, related to the technological change that is taking place in the production of poultry and swine, that could be strenghtening the competitiveness of the Center-West.
