Resumo

The present study investigated the financial viability of agroforestry systems with babassu and cassava in the typical scenario of Mata dos Cocais, in which dense populations of babassu permeate low-tech crops and low-productivity pastures. Despite the massive presence of babassu in deforested Amazonian land, the literature on AFS modeling does not list the species as an option in crop consortia. The analysis proposes a novel modeling approach in which babassu is intercropped with cassava, native and typical crops from northern Brazil. The modeling allows a business view of the agroforestry base when projecting results and financial indicators of 4 theoretical AFS consortia with babassu. The first step was to systematize productive information about this palm tree in native or planted condition. These sheets enabled the modeling to simulate different initial densities of babassu, and to assess the impact that the existence of the native adult babassu grove projects on the financial results of the agroforestry system. The interpretation of the financial indicators of the 7 simulations scenarios shows the panorama of economic viability of AFS with babassu in Mata dos Cocais, and delimits combinations of babassu density and coconut price that make these agroforestry systems attractive to the investor or rural producer.
