Resumo

In this paper, we present detailed evidence on intergenerational mobility of education in Brazil, based on the PNAD 1996 mobility supplement. The results show that the degree of intergenerational mobility of education in Brazil is smaller than the one observed in developed and developing countries, with the exception of Colombia. The degree of mobility varies by region and race. In particular, mobility is smaller in the Northeast than in the Southeast, and is smaller among blacks than among whites. The
results show that mobility has been increasing significantly for younger cohorts. We also present evidence that the intergenerational mobility of education is smaller for sons of less-educated fathers than for sons of fathers with higher schooling, with the exception of fathers at the top of the schooling distribution. In particular, the pattern of mobility for sons of fathers without any formal education is
crucial to understand differences in the degree of mobility between races and regions and the dynamics of mobility across cohorts.
