Media coverage of Brazil’s UNSC membershipa longitudinal content analysis

Resumo

How does Brazil’s membership as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council impact domestic media reporting of Brazil as an international actor in the United Nations? Existing literature on media frames and agenda-setting seek to understand the motives and incentives behind which news articles are reported and why. There is a small but growing literature on how being part of prestigious international organizations, such as the UNSC, changes this political dynamic. To address some methodological and theoretical gaps on how the Brazilian media differently reports the country’s international actions on years when it is part of the UNSC compared to years when Brazil is not a member, I conducted a longitudinal content analysis of 7.219 news articles from 2001-2024. The empirical strategy combines quantitative tools of sentiment analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation model to study the variations on media coverage. Results are aligned with the existing literature and show how media coverage has multifaceted influential factors. In years when Brazil is part of the UNSC, there is a greater media visibility, as well as more positive tones. Further, there is a discussion of topic-covering for all years. As content analysis does not entail inference statistical methods, this research paper does not aim to claim traditional causal mechanisms. Further research is indicated.
