Resumo

This objective of this thesis is to present a biography of Marshal José Pessoa, one of the main military leaders of the 1930s and 1940s. José Pessoa, who was born into oligarchic families with strong political influence in the country, was against the involvement of the military personnel in politics. In his opinion, the military way of doing politics was the genesis of great misery for the Nation, despite his participation in the revolutionary movement of 1930, which deposed the President Washington Luís. Due to his virtues and values, which made him one of the perfect models of soldier and military leader to be followed by members of the Institution, he is part of the pantheon of personalities who are revered within the Brazilian Army. Pessoa fought in the First World War, commanded the Fire Department of the Federal District and the Realengo Military School, chaired the Military Club, participated in the founding of the Center for Studies and Defense of Petroleum and was the leader of the Commission responsible to find a new location for the New Federal Capital. In 1937, he took a strong stand against the Estado Novo coup. For the clash of ideas with General Góes Monteiro and General Eurico Gaspar Dutra, he was withdrawn from the center of the military power and led to ostracism at the end of his career. Having said that, the focus of the research was not only on rescuing his military trajectory, but also on his family origins and the way he stood before political, economic and social scenarios of the Army and of the Nation. The methodological and theoretical indications of Vavy Pacheco Borges and Gilberto Velho were used as methodological tools for the selection of what seemed to be significant in Pessoa’s life and for the analysis of the context in which his professional trajectory was built. A research that was carried out in the documentary collections of the Research and Documentation Center of Contemporary History of Brazil, at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, allowed the access to the sources. We conclude that, by defending the withdrawal of the military personnel from political parties throughout his military life, José Pessoa and a few other generals were part of a defeated Army project in the post-Revolution period of 1930.
