Resumo

In the 1830-1870 period, investment in slaves represented over 40% of a coffee plantation's total value; thus, labour setthe limits to the reproduction of the slave-based enterprise. An instrumentto analyse this reproduction is the demographic study of the slave population. This work studies types of social relationship that acted as strategies for perpetuating slavery, emphasizing the formation of slave families and slave ro^as (garden plots). Data from inventories indicate that over one third of the slaveholdings were organized into families with evidence showing that many slave families were preserved when slaves were sold or left as inheritance.
