Resumo

This dissertation examines how alcohol production in biorefineries incorporates Circular Business Model (CBM) practices within the context of the transition toward more sustainable production systems. Grounded in the principles of the circular economy and bioeconomy, the study is based on the premise that waste can be valorized as productive inputs, thereby contributing to the reduction of environmental externalities and the generation of economic value. The research adopts the case of AL Plant, located in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, as its unit of analysis through a qualitative approach structured around analytical dimensions identified in the literature: environmental, social, economic-market, regulatory, territorial, governance, and stakeholder-related dimensions. The findings indicate that the incorporation of CBMs occurs through the integration of six interdependent structural mechanisms: the use of agro-industrial and food waste as productive inputs; the implementation of reverse logistics systems to reintegrate such waste into production processes; the adoption of conversion technologies enabling a waste-to-value approach; integration into higher valueadded markets, such as the neutral alcohol market; compliance with regulatory and environmental frameworks; and coordination among stakeholders for the governance of the circular model. The study concludes that circularity in biorefineries is not merely an isolated technological attribute, but rather an organizational model sustained by the convergence of process engineering, market strategy, and interorganizational governance, enabling the reconciliation of economic performance with the reduction of environmental impacts.
