Resumo

Aiming to contribute to the literature on economic drivers of violence, this paper will observe whether the variation of commodity prices impact agrarian conflict in the Brazilian Amazon. Rural violence is a phenomenon vastly explored in different areas of study, yet my paper specifically looks at the relationship between exogenous price shocks of gold and its impacts on land and resource disputes. The hypothesis that this study tests using a difference in differences (DID) model is that the increase in the price of gold leads to an increase in rural violence in municipalities that have that commodity. I find that positive shocks on the price of gold are generally associated with an increase in violence. Further estimations indicate that the effect varies for homicides per race, linked to the differentiation between legal and illegal mining.
