Resumo
One of the drawbacks in assessing the impacts of investment in education follows from the fact that it influences not only the living conditions of those who are educated (private effects of education), but also causes a series of external factors on the welfare of those surrounding them. Moreover, the effects of such investment are not only varied but also have several dimensions. On one hand, they may be consolidated by improving either the quality or quantity of education. On the other, there may be a difference between the investments in education according to the level at which they occur, and may be related to an improvement in basic, secondary, university or technical education. This study is limited to assessing the impact of a quantitative spread in the educational system without, however, assessing the impact of improvements on the quality of education. The study is undertaken for the overall educational system and is, therefore, not broken down into educational levels. More specifically, what we seek to assess is the impact of the increases in the expected schooling of the school-age population at any given moment in time (synthetic schooling) on the future socioeconomic development.
