Resumo
This paper discusses the introduction of digital systems for process control in a petrochemical company located in Camaçari, Bahia. It analyses the changes brought about in the areas of organization and methods of work and, particularly, in the field of professional qualification. Data survey was based on qualitative interviews with company engineers and managers, the team of industrial automation in charge of programming the process software receiving top priority treatment. The adoption of this new technology is related in the study to the joint measures which contribute to improving the competitive standards in our domestic petrochemistry, since the foreign markets represent a way out of the crisis the industry has been facing as from the '70s. However, the inherent flexibility of said technological innovation involves new organizational arrangements, capable of turning the decision-making process into more agile procedures to adequately face the constant instability of the market. From such a necessity, as well as from the very nature of informative systems, arises a New Organization of Production, that in turn originates negotiable changes on work processes, on personnel's capacitation and on the human resources policy supporting the organizational model.
