Impacto da imigração sobre o crescimento potencialo caso do Reino Unido

Resumo

The present study proposes to explore the relationship between potential output and immigration in the case of the United Kingdom, where the topic has gained even more attention in the context of assessing the impacts of Brexit. Defining potential output through an aggregate production function that relates the inputs for the production process to the output, two functions are derived: one with the presence of immigrants in the labor input and other excluding them. The exercise finds a positive contribution from immigrants over the period of analysis, between 1998 and 2019, before the Covid-19 outbreak. The results are in line with expectations based on economic theory, in which the inflow of immigrants leads to an expansion of the workforce and, hence, greater aggregate output capacity, and with similar exercises produced by central banks in several countries.
