Resumo

This text seeks to contribute to the literature that studies financialization, with a focus on two important aspects: financial globalization (as a general phenomenon) and the integration of the periphery. To this end, the objective of the article is to carry out an analysis of the process of constitution of financial globalization and its main characteristics, with emphasis on peripheral integration and the differentiated impacts on this periphery. The text’s central hypotheses are that central and peripheral countries integrate into financial globalization in an asymmetric way; and that the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) led to important changes in financial globalization, which accentuated these asymmetries, with emphasis on the differentiated effects of international liquidity cycles and the expanded role of macroeconomic variables in these cycles. In the light of this transformation, we discuss how the composition of flows, the presence of new agents and local markets condition the insertion of the periphery.
