Elementos para uma teoria da pacificação

Resumo

Through a bibliographic discussion, this paper outlines some aspects of state-building in Brazil and relates them with the institutionalization of a legal apparatus of 'protection' and of control of the native population, or, in other words, an apparatus of conflict mediation between European settlers and indigenous peoples. The organization of such a legal system coincides with a process of rationalization and bureaucratization of state administration, including the normalization of subjects and tensions that had opposed the colonial enterprise. Finally, I trace a parallel with the creation of indigenous lands and propose a macro-sociological interpretation of a 'process of pacification'.
