Resumo
This study analyzes the growth of the household consumption of electric energy in Brazil in the period 1963/95, estimates the income and price elasticities of its demand and makes projections for the quantities to be demanded in the period 1997/2005. The econometric model used to update these demand elasticities takes explicitly into account the indirect impact upon the demand for electricity of the observed fall the real prices of electrical household appliances have shown in the last two decades, allowing the expansion of this stock. The projection exercise aims not only to quantify the yearly volume demanded in the future, but also to assess the effect that pricing policies to recover the real value of the electricity tariffs — enforced either to induce better profits for the public utilities to be privatized, or to ration the quantities demanded by users — would have upon this demand.
