Resumo

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the main changes that took place in the spatial distribution of Brazilian population through 1940 to 1996. This considers the two dimensions of this process: rural-urban and inter-regions. It was seen that Brazilian territorial occupation over the studied time- period was characterized by a great loss of rural population and a marked concentration on large cities. This process took place in different ways and different timing among the several regions. Migration is the principal determinant of this process as natural increase is higher in emigration areas. Another movement was observed in this study, the expansion of agricultural frontier in the South, Mid West and the North regions. This was paralleled with an increase also as well in rural as in urban populations. Moreover, over the same time, a new Federal capital was build in a low demographic density area, the Mid West. In despite of the large population increase experienced by the Mid West region, its rapid urbanization as well as the population increase in the North region, the spatial distribution of Brazilian population has not changed much among the five major regions. At the end of this century, Brazilian population is still concentrated in the Southeast region. Changes were more important within regions. Although at different pace, all regions experienced a large concentration of their population in the largest cities. This was paralleled with loss of rural population. This took place also in regions which experienced an expansion of their frontiers. Economic activities are again being concentrated in the large cities of the Southeast region. It means that in the near future, Brazilian population would be more concentrated in great urban centers.
