Resumo

This doctoral thesis critically examines the idea of the crisis of social reproduction, its theoretical and conceptual assumptions and its applicability to the Brazilian case. The theory of social reproduction, rooted in Marxist feminist theory, seeks to understand the processes by which capitalist society reproduces itself and sustains social relations, constructing gender hierarchies. However, the theory is mostly grounded in the experiences of women in the Global North, which raises questions about its relevance and limitations when applied to the Global South. This questioning, in turn, leads to a critique of the very theoretical assumptions of the TRS approach to crisis and its reflections on the process of financialization of social reproduction. The research involves three main parts. Firstly, I explore the historical and theoretical foundations of social reproduction theory in feminist studies, as well as presenting an overview of contemporary social reproduction theory, with a particular emphasis on the crisis of care and the role of the state. Secondly, based on the Brazilian political economy literature, the research proposes to identify possible gaps in SRT, arguing mainly that, in the context of the development of neoliberalism, social policies in Brazil have undergone a qualitative change, rather than a quantitative withdrawal of the state. This challenges the SRT view of the very transformations of neoliberal capitalism in contexts of the Global North and reveals fundamental theoretical problems. To overcome these problems, I propose an integrative engagement with approaches that work on the idea of financialization as a technology of power and control over the future. Finally, I present an outline of what a Marxist critique of law and the state might look like in the context of social reproduction.
