Resumo
Intermediate-sized cities in Brazil shown a varied productive growth perfomance in the seventies and in the eighties in terms of labor expansion. The objective of this study is to examine how these perfomances associate with different structural characteristics exhibited by these cities in the initial year of each decade. This exam is made with the use of regression analysis, employing variables to represent these characteristics, such as their demographic size, degree of industrialization, income leveI and a measurement of income inequality, educational leveI of the population, size of services provided by the infrastructure, leveI of public expenditure and size of the market. Besides these characteristics, a control is also made in terms of atributes such as region, spatial location (metropolitan and non-metropolitan) and urban scale. Regressions were also estimated in the same form to evaluate how these characteristics discriminate their performances for growth in total income. The result of this study confirms the expectation of the role played by those characteristics for both dependent variables.
