Convergence analysis of multidimensional development for intermediary regions of Minas Gerais State

Resumo

Over time, the idea of wealth and the concept of development or progress have changed. At first, development was associated with economic growth. Subsequently, due to the finding that economic growth did not necessarily mean social progress, the term economic and social development was used. When conceptualizing development in a multidimensional context, GDP per capita is now seen as a limited measure, as it does not capture issues related to the population's living standards and well-being. In this context, this work aims to verify if there is a convergence process of multidimensional development among the thirteen intermediate regions of Minas Gerais. This analysis also considers, in addition to income, other aspects such as education, health, poverty, housing and employment conditions. The time frame refers to the years 1991, 2000 and 2010 and the methods used consist in calculating the sigma-convergence and the Cluster Analysis. The results suggest an antagonistic effect, through the dispersion analysis, for the intermediate regions of Minas Gerais, in which there are evidences of sigma-convergence under the social perspective and divergence for economic aspects. The cluster analysis, on the other hand, identified clusters of intermediate regions, for each period, but without the statistical significance that proved the distance of these groups in the defined time period.
