Resumo

This dissertation computes global inflation as the first principal component of inflation from 47 countries, considering the post-pandemic period. While the global factor explains more than 60% of the inflation variance in developed economies, it explains less than 25% in emerging economies. This share increases substantially after 2020 for all groups. In terms of forecasting, it is found that using global or specific group dynamics consistently outperforms benchmarks, but it helps more in forecasting the inflation of developed countries than that of emerging countries. The inflation forecast for developed economies improves on average by 15% if we use a common factor of only developed countries instead of a global common factor as an explanatory variable. For emerging economies, the performance is better when using the global factor.
