Resumo

Brazil is one of the countries with the greatest availability of fresh water in the world. Despite this great abundance, the resource is unevenly distributed across the territory. Equally unequal is the population distribution across Brazilian regions. On the one hand, the North region, with lower population density, has the highest water availability in the country. This regional disproportion of water availability and resident population results in greater human pressure on water resources in some regions compared to others. As a result, in certain regions, the creation of river basin committees occurs more slowly. This is the case, for example, in the North region. Analyzing the challenges and perspectives related to the implementation of river basin committees (RBCs) in the North Region constitutes the objective of this study. RBCs in the region face technical, political and financial difficulties. More robust communication with society, support for member participation in meetings, development of basin plans, and technical training of members represent some of the elements necessary for RBCs in the North region to work properly.
