Cassiquiareo canal da integração fluvial entre Brasil e Venezuela

Resumo

The main objective of this paper is to present the importance of the Cassiquiare Canal in Venezuela as the centerpiece of the process of physical integration of the Orinoco and Amazonas basins. The Cassiquiare Canal is a rare geographical formation that has been studied since the time of colonization due to its geostrategical condition and it has been addressed several times as a central topic for integration during the first diplomatic meetings between Brazil and Venezuela. One of the most relevant hardships for the physical integration of northern South America has been the inability to enhance waterways as means of transportation of goods in medium and long distances. This type of connection is very supportive of economic development processes since it helps to increase productivity in regions that historically have remained isolated. Therefore, the Cassiquiare Canal stands as the one chance to support the economic and social development of the region called “Island of Guyanas”, which lies productively and commercially disjointed.
