Resumo
In order to characterize the sustainability of the rural areas, a methodology was proposed to characterize economic, social and environmental development, and a specific study was carried out for establishments located in the rural area in the 645 municipalities of the State of São Paulo. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that: (i) objectively, the sustainability of the rural environment can be characterized by means of economic, social and environmental development indexes; (ii) the proposed methodology is suitable for characterizing sustainability in rural areas using the geometric mean, as it is more restrictive, showing greater adherence to current society values of valuing social and environmental development; and (iii) due to the characterization of the economic, social and environmental sustainability of establishments located in rural areas in the 645 municipalities of the State of São Paulo, they can be subdivided into four classes: (Class A) lower class containing 25% of the municipalities in the State of São Paulo with the values of the index of sustainable rural development (economic, social and environmental) (IESA) between the minimum value and the first quartile, (Class B) lower middle class containing 25% of the municipalities in the State of São Paulo with the values of the index of sustainable rural development (economic, social and environmental) (IESA) between the value corresponding to the first quartile and the median, (Class C) intermediate upper class containing 25% of the municipalities of the State of São Paulo with the values of the sustainable rural development index (economic, social and environmental) (IESA) between the value corresponding to the median and the third quartile, and (Class D) upper class contend o 25% of municipalities in the State of São Paulo with the values of the sustainable rural development index (economic, social and environmental) (IESA) between the value corresponding to the third quartile and the maximum value.
