Resumo
The question of farmers having (or not having) capacity for paying monetary correction in their financial operations gained a certain degree of controversy during the initial months of 1988, as well as in the debates during the elaboration of Brazil's new Constitution, particularly with the return of the economy to very high inflation rates. This paper analyses such question in the specific context of the credit for working capital in the crop year 1987/88. Our conclusion is that in this year, including the behaviour of some of the relevant variables, a large part of the agricultural sector presented evidences of reasonable or even good paying capacity for the credit taken during the crop year 1987/88.
