Resumo

This dissertation is the product of a research about the Brazilian Championship of State Soccer Teams, the only national tournament involving teams from several Brazilian states. Organized by the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD), it was held between 1922 and 1962, with an isolated edition in 1987. This competition did not receive due attention from the Brazilian sports historiography nor even from the press from the end of the 20th century onwards, although it mobilized players, press at the time, fans and managers for decades. One of the objectives of the research is to register the history of the championship and investigate how it contributed to strengthening the state soccer federations and what are the ramifications, up to the present day, of power and management of these entities. The event no longer exists, but such organizations continue to be extremely strong, including having the majority of votes to define the composition of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), appearing more important than clubs of the A and B series. The period surveyed goes from the beginning of the 20th century, when organized soccer was established in Brazil, to the end of the Estado Novo. Emphasis was given to the first period of the Vargas Era, 1930 - 1945, when the competition reached the peak of its prestige, despite the centralizing personality of government actions. The research was carried out in newspapers and periodicals from the period 1901 to 1945, through the digital library of the National Library, with the support of studies about the importance of the sport in the formation of Brazilian identity. The product was also based on eight lectures about the history of the championship and its background, given to the Football Literature and Memory Group (MEMOFUT), between 2016 and 2017. For the current work, the product will be a book.
