Resumo

This paper analyses the beginnings of capital accumulation based on coffee cultivation in Sao Paulo, through an exhaustive study of the households of the inhabitants of Bananal that were producing coffee in 1829. The research covers the existent manuscript censuses for Bananal between 1799 and 1829. The process of accumulation was assessed according to the variations in slaveholding sizes. The households selected were traced back from 1829 to 1799 or to the year they first appear in the registers. The study points to the existence of different rhytms of accumulation. At first, before coffee cultivation was disseminated, the difference was set by participation in the market. Later on, the difference appears in a new pattern, between coffee planters and non-planters. Finally, the accumulation showed different rhytms according to the planters' wealth, measured mainly by the size of slaveholding,.
