Atribuição de causalidade e de controle a loucura por diversos profissionais e por religiosos

Resumo

The present study was designed to obtain data regarding perception about causes and control of mental health, among university level professionals and members of a religious denomination (priests and nouns). Two questionnaries were utilized for the study, with two point scales: the Mental Health Locus of Origin (MHLO) and the Mental Health Locus of Control (MHLC) questionnaries. The questionnaries were submitted to and answered by a total of 420 subjects, 360 of whom were professionals (psychologists, psysicians including psychiatrists, nurses including psychiatric nurses, social assistants, sociologísts, administration technologists, economists and engineers) and 60 were priests and nuns. Distribution of the subject s was performed according to the number of points achieved in each scale: utilizing the MHLO scale, subjects were separated be tween those that hold the opinion that mental disease has organic causes and those that believe mental disease is linked to environmental causes. Utilizing the MHLC scale, the subjects were separated according to their opinion on whether the success of psychotherapy depends more on the behavior of the patient or on the therapists capabilities. Results obtain e d from both questionnaries were statistícally analysed for each professional group. The correlation coefficient between locus of origin and locus of control was obtaíned. These results allowed the A. to conclude that humanities-oriented professionals believed more than humanities-oriented professionals, and these more than religious subjects and technologists, that mental desease is caused by environmental factors and that its control depends more on the patient's behavior than on the therapist's capabilities.
