Resumo

In Brazil, companies which operate in the international trade in continental ornamental fish native to the Amazon region, work in an extractivist model, that is, acquire and commercialize products extracted from nature without promoting significant alteration in their elementary properties. In the 1970s, the country was a major exporter of ornamental fish originating from extractivism; however, from the 1980s on, export trade declined until it stagnated in the 1990s, remaining in this condition until the present days, except for brief periods of time. In the last four years, Brazilian companies have suffered substantial loses in the national and international markets, weakening to a point of putting the entire productive chain in risk. These losses occurred due to the fact that the Amazon ornamental industry has always taken a conservative approach, particularly regarding its production chain, seeking to find its form of existence in nature. It has also failed to update its market trends and regulations, opting for doing more of the same and betting that the conditions of the past would return. But the growing international pressure for the control of predatory fishing; the toughening of the Brazilian environmental authorities; the increase in competition through the development of captive-breeding of several species and types of Amazon fish in Asian countries and the USA; the increase in clients’ demand for novelty and the lack of logistic in the air mode available in northern Brazil have taken the industry to the brink of bankruptcy. In this context, the present study aims to analyze an extractivist company in the field of freshwater ornamental fish trade and to identify strategic innovations which might bring the rupture of its current business model, maintaining the perennity of the business for the next 10 years, propelling its basis of competition– its model of creating, delivering and capturing value – and indicating ways for the sustainable development of this field in Brazil.
