Resumo
This paper has two main objectives: in the first place, to analyse the behavior of financed imports in the period 1991/96, seeking to stablish the links with the arbitrage of internal and external interest rates. In the second place, to analyse the special case of the imports of the main agricultural products: cotton, rice, corn and wheat. The paper raises the question of how to determine the relative importance of the several factors — trade liberalization, exchange rate appreciation, external financing of imports, among others — involved in the increase of agricultural imports after 1990, taking the case of cotton for the purpose of illustrating the nature of the problem.
