Resumo

Three different essays divide this thesis to understand Rede Globo Jornal Nacional's approach in the coverage of the eight presidential elections after Brazilian re-democratization. The first one is a review of the literature that has investigated that coverage. It reconstructs the political and journalistic narrative presented in those episodes using exclusively the information brought about in the 108 studies reviewed. It also brings some data that summarize the research on the subject. The second essay seeks to understand the visual framing in the reports about the candidates' day-to-day the 2018 first-round campaign. The third and final one performs a similar analysis regarding the second-round coverage of the same election and evaluates the proportion of journalists' images on the screen to the candidates themselves. In the first round, the findings indicate that Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) was the primary beneficiary by the TV newscast, mainly for the comprehensive coverage received from the attack he suffered on September 6. In the second round, Bolsonaro also had a small advantage over his competitor, Fernando Haddad; however, the data did not show statistical relevance. On the screen dispute between candidates and journalists, the former occupied much larger space than the last ones, demonstrating that Brazilian journalism does not follow the USA's pattern, where studies show that journalists have taken much of the time on screen that candidates occupied in the past.
