Resumo

The emerging markets have become the main investment focus of the private equity investment funds in the latest years. In 2011, due to its market regulations, its economic strength, capable to mitigate the effects of the global crisis, and its consumer market in expansion, Brazil became the main investment focus in the private equity industry. In such context, the Brazilian socioeconomic structure has undergone a remarkable development. The emergence of the middle class (classe “C”) was one of the pillars of the Brazilian economic recovery, through the income and consumption expansion it promoted. Such phenomenon leveraged businesses focused on this target group and, thus, those started to demand financial resources and strategic management capabilities, in order to be able to follow and respond to this growing potential demand. Through an analytic model proposed and applied to two real cases, this dissertation uses the tertiary educational sector as observation focus of the attractiveness and value exchanges that motivate private equity investment vehicles to invest in tertiary educational companies with focus on classe “C”, as well as the same motivation of those institutions to seek for this type of investments.
